Intensive English Language Program

Essendon Keilor College has an accredited English Language Centre and offers an Intensive English Language Program (IELP) onsite at our Essendon campus. On arrival our international students are assessed to determine their language proficiency. Depending on their needs, they complete a twenty or thirty-week program in the Language Centre to prepare them for mainstream classes and to introduce them to the Australian education system and culture.

Own onsite ELC allows our newly arrived International Students to transition into their studies in Australia and school life at Essendon Keilor College. In the ELC, students will have the opportunity to:

  • Attend an orientation program, tours and excursions

  • Develop connections with their peers and teachers

  • Understand the expectations of students at our school

  • Continue to develop their language skills and learning behaviours to support progress and achievement in mainstream classes

We believe that tailoring the program to individual needs is important so that English skills can develop more quickly. We ensure maximum support for all students by offering a pre-VCE study program and EAL classes once students transition into mainstream classes.

EAL classes: Specialised English as an Additional Language classes run at Years 10, 11 and 12. These programs combine both local and international EAL students with specialised staff to foster continued improvement in English and to maximise results in this area.

A Recent Success Story

Mark Pham came to Essendon Keilor College to study from Vietnam.

He received an ATAR score of 94. The subjects he chose to study in VCE were EAL, Vietnamese First Language, Math Methods, Specialist Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

At school Mark was involved in many extracurricular activities including Chess and Badminton. He received a scholarship from Swinburne University and is now studying a Bachelor of Architecture.

“The English Language Centre fully prepared me for mainstream classes and made it easy for me to understand the lessons. The people are helpful and kind. I try to be as independent as possible, but it’s reassuring to have the support of staff who speak my language. I would highly recommend EKC to international students. Why not have a great experience while you improve your English and increase your knowledge.”
